Clowning the Clown

The Orwellian authoritarianism and gray palette conformity depicted in the new “Breakfast Defectors” video could be an outtake from pretty much any film adaptation of a contemporary dystopian YA novel, The Giver, Hunger Games, Divergent, . . .

At first it seems like another détournement in Adbusters‘ longstanding campaign against McDonald’s:

But as Dee Dee counts off — “1-2-3-4!” — the Ramones‘ “Blitzkreig Bop” to soundtrack our heroes’ escape through the gray wall to the brighter colors of Taco Bell hipster-ville, it becomes clear that the message is not anti-corporate at all. Instead the ad simply promotes switching corporations. In fact, when you add corporate siblings Pizza Hut and KFC to Taco Bell, Yum! Brands actually has more storefronts worldwide than McDonald’s (though McDonald’s has much larger gross sales).

Oh yeah, Joey Ramone was a vegetarian.
