Happy Birthday to Elvis Presley and David Bowie

Elvis Presley and David Bowie share January 8th as their birthday, albeit 12 years apart (1935 and 1947, respectively).

It seems that Bowie sent Elvis a tape of “Golden Years” in hopes that his idol might record it. Of course, by 1975 the King was in serious decline and it is doubtful that he ever would have considered a tune written by a fay Brit, but here’s to what might have been:

Historical note — “Golden Years” was a #10 single for Bowie, one of three top 20 hits for him in 1975 (“Fame” went to #1). Elvis released six singles that year, only two of which entered the top 40; the highest, the now largely forgotten “My Boy,” reached only #20.
