Tanya Tagaq, Throat Singer

I can’t quite decide whether this is brilliant or complete bullshit:

After I got over my initial revulsion, even horror of the sounds coming out of Tanya Tagaq, her throat singing became oddly fascinating. It’s like the complete soundtrack of a giallo movie*, one of the really creepy giallos (gialli?) with the moaning and howling voices of tormented souls emanating from dungeon walls dripping blood, condensed into one ten minute sequence.

I just ordered her Polaris Music Prize winning album, Animism.

* a genre of cheap Italian psychothrillers/horror films that peaked during the ’70s
