Saul Zaentz, 1921-2014

Saul Zaentz once sued John Fogerty for copying himself.

Zaentz, owner of Fantasy Records, held the rights to the Creedence Clearwater Revival catalog.  He claimed Fogerty stole the chorus of his solo hit “The Old Man Down the Road” . . .

. . . from Creedence’s “Run Through the Jungle,” which Fogerty also wrote:

The courts sided with Fogerty.  He in turn sued Zaentz for legal fees.  Aspects of that case went all the way to the Supreme Court, which sided with Fogerty.

Of course, Fogerty kind of baited Zaentz with another song that appeared alongside “The Old Man Down the Road” on Centerfield, “Zanz Kant Danz”:

The song’s title was soon changed to “Vanz Kant Danz.”
