Cover Songs, revisited

I have extolled the value of cover songs as entries into the work of new artists. So as an occasional feature, I will highlight new covers I run across.

Check out Emika’s cover of Chris Isaak’s classic song “Wicked Game.”

The YouTube page even offers a link for a free download of the song. Then move on to the rest of her excellent new album.

AM & Shawn Lee have recorded a new cover of Joe Jackson’s “Steppin’ Out”:

And then there is Chilly Gonzales.  He has collaborated with numerous other musicians, including Feist, Jamie Lidell and Daft Punk:

He has also released a number of solo recordings, most notably the two beautiful volumes Solo Piano and Solo Piano II.  On May 16-18, 2009, he took solo piano to a whole new extreme, playing for 26 hours and 12 minutes to set the Guinness World Record for longest concert by a solo artist.  And he did it without repeating any songs, promising, “I will break the record without sounding like a broken record.”

Portions of that concert were recently released for download from the usual places, including a selection called 1980’s Hit-Parade with this cover of Prince’s “When Doves Cry”:

ps — Gonzales’s record stood for only two months, when it was overturned by Kuzhalmannam Ramakrishnan.
